Stephen Romer is among the most talented of Britain's young poets. He borrows from various disciplines, such as mathematics and theology, to enrich his elegant and ironic poetry. He talks with Clive Wilmer about the Victorian poet Arthur Hugh Clough , teaching English as a foreign language and the vanity of Parisians.

Beyond the Tunnel of History
Five programmes.
2: The Golden Fleece 'I would like to start rewriting French history from a European point of view.'
Burgundy to most people means a wine, possibly a colour. But in late medieval times. this huge duchy was home to perhaps the most richly textured culture in Europe.
Economically, its wealth was founded on wool; not for nothing was the Golden Fleece adopted as the ducal symbol.
Jacques Darras suggests we can learn from
Burgundy some lessons for our communal European future.
