Thomas Simpson was one of the leading figures among the English expatriate musicians active on the Continent in the early 1600s. He compiled his 'Taffel-Consort', a collection of instrumental music by Simpson, Dowland, Ferrabosco and others, in 1621, when the hardships of the 30 Years War were having a serious effect on the publication of music in Germany.

Paul Rutherford thinks that the two most vital ingredients in music are composition and improvisation, and he is fascinated by the apparent contradictions which rnusicians encounter between them.
To try out his theories, in the autumn of 1987 he wrote
Autumn Initiatives as the basis for a 19-piece orchestra including two pianos, two
French horns and two basses. Charles Fox introduces a recording of the work that the orchestra performed in Islington Town Hall, London. Between the two halves of the work he talks to Paul Rutherford.
