Thomas Simpson was one of the leading figures among the English expatriate musicians active on the Continent in the early 1600s. He compiled his 'Taffel-Consort', a collection of instrumental music by Simpson, Dowland, Ferrabosco and others, in 1621, when the hardships of the 30 Years War were having a serious effect on the publication of music in Germany.
