A story of love and art in the operatic world of Venice in the 1830s. Massimilla, torn between her love for Emilio and duty to her husband. Cattaneo, epitomises the artistic balance between feeling and order. Her husband meanwhile is advancing the career of a young soprano, and his friend, Capraja, that of a young tenor.
