by Friedrich Schiller adapted for radio by Anthony Vivis and Tinch Minter from the translation by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Set at the time of the 30 Years War, Schiller's epic drama is dominated by three themes: love, astrology and militarism.
Proclaimed 'the greatest general of his day' and 'saviour of his country', Wallenstein is urged by both planetary predictions and the advice of his friends to fulfil his ultimate ambition by seizing the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. But he resists too long, and his procrastination leads to the deaths of all who love him, and ultimately to his own destruction.
