The difficult thing ...is to turn the real world into algebra. John Maynard Smith ,
Professor of Biology at the University of Sussex, is as much concerned with the evolution of behaviour as with that of form. He discusses with Lewis Wolpert of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London, how this enables him to combine three of the things which delight him most: watching animals, doing sums, and discovering that a piece of mathematics actually tells you something about the things you see while birdwatching.

4: Bohu is persuaded to delay his official suicide for a week, to taste the delights of ordinary life. He ends by composing an anti-epic, bitterly attacking the emperor. The poem is passed to the hands of a top civil servant, who realises that the poem can be subverted to suit the emperor's purpose admirably. Read by Martin Jarvis and Dinsdale Landen
