(sung in Czech): records Smetana's third work for the stage is a tragic, romantic opera, based on a Czech legend. Dalibor was first heard in Prague in 1868, when, because of press hostility, the opera was misunderstood by the public.

Rudyard Kipling recorded his impressions about the future of New Zealand in a short story, One Lady at Wairakei, published when he visited the country in 1891. Harry Ricketts recently rediscovered the story, and compares
Kipling's predictions about the country with the present reality.

In 1913 Geoffrey Courtney went to Russia as tutor to the son of a lady-in-waiting to the Tsarina, the wife of Tsar Nicholas II. During an idyllic 12 months he shared in the privileged life of the Tsarist court circle.
