Francis Smith shows now much can be learnt about the life of the black American from the blues he sang.
'I ain't got no shoes, I ain't got no clothes, the house-rent man done put my things outdoors.'
Things were particularly bad for the blacks during the 30s' Depression, and many singers, including Leroy Carr, Big Bill Broonzy and Lonnie Johnson, vividly described the difficulties they faced.
