In the 1940s, Jean Rhys's books went out of print for about 20 years and it was widely presumed that she had died. The women in her books - often chorus-girls and actresses killing time after some romantic mishap - have been compared with the put-upon heroines of pulp fiction. Yet Jean Rhys continued to write and finally received wide acclaim for her fiction. Paul Bailey presents an intellectual portrait of Jean Rhys.
