In the ninth summer of the Trojan war Achilles withdrew his forces from the Greek Confederacy because Agamemnon appropriated one of his female slaves.
Thereafter the Trojans gained the upper hand. Hector raided the Greek beach-head and burned one of their ships. It looked as if the Greeks would be destroyed. At this moment Patroclus came to Achilles and begged for his help.
