The Court of Burgundy
Through the acquisition of large tracts of land in eastern France and the Netherlands, 15th-century Burgundy enjoyed a degree of opulence and culture that was the envy of her neighbours. A succession of dukes patronised the leading Flemish painters of the day and numerous composers, including Dufay, Binchois and Busnois, who carried their art over the threshold of the Renaissance.
