A Future History by General Sir John Hackett and others, which has recently been published. suggests that a major conventional war culminating in a nuclear strike will eventually occur between East and Wfst. Professor Laurence Martin. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, examines the plausibility of the political and military scenario suggested by this ' cautionary tale ' and questions some of the authors' assumptions about the relation between nuclear and conventional weapons.
