Alexander Pushkin's biographer, Henri Troyat, wrote: 'Translation of Pushkin is treason'. But a number of people have tried, notably Vladimir Nabokov, who produced an unrhymed English version of the Russian writer's poetic novel.
Then, a few months ago, a new, privately printed translation appeared, written in the same iambic tetrameters as Pushkin's original and it was enthusiastically acclaimed by virtually all its reviewers.
It was by a retired diplomat, Sir Charles Johnston, and in this talk he discusses the difficulties of his task and the ways in which he tried to resolve them.

Fabrice Pinte is a young French poet. When he returned to Paris after wandering around the world he made his home in a disused shop in one of the small streets of Montmartre. Gradually he learnt that the previous inhabitant of his quarters had been an Italian who died many years previously under mysterious circumstances.
This programme is a montage of the voices of the people who knew the Italian of the Rue des Cloys and Fabrice Pinte 's poetic meditations on the evanescence of human personality and existence. This is the original programme in French. It is Introduced by Martin Esslin , who was the Chairman of the Italia Prize jury 1975 in Florence, where it was awarded the RAI prize far special qualities of originality and inventiveness In production techniques.

Sixteenth-century church music can far too easily be regarded as a succession of fine works by Flemish. Italian and English composers. Spain, whose distinctive Mozarabic chant is still sung In Toledo Cathedral, produced some of the greatest music of the period, notably by such acknowledged composers as Morales, Guerrero and Victoria.
