Grand opera in five actt Music by Meyerbeer Libretto by EUGENE SCRIBE
(sung in French: records)
Loosely based on a historical Anabaptist revolt in the early 16th century, Meyerbeer's opera tells the story of John, a simple God-fearing man, torn between devotion to his mother and love for his fiancée. Possessed of a deep hatred of tyranny, and with a tendency towards religious dreaming, he is goaded into accepting the leadership of the Anabaptists, as Le Prophete, in order to revenge himself upon the local despot, the Count of Oberthal.
