Born in Geneva, the son of a Protestant pastor, Frank Martin discovered early on his predilectionfor minor keys, and the greatest musical event of his life was hearing Bach's St Matthew Passion at the age of 12. If his music conveys a certain sobriety typical of the Swiss, there are also compensations in terms of beauty of sound, depth of feeling, and a consistency of style regardless of fashion.
