The early 1770s were years of fundamental change as far as Haydn's compositions were concerned. An increase in emotional content, drama, thematic concentration, contrapuntal ingenuity and technical mastery in general - all these are features of his music during this time. Links have often been drawn between this sudden maturing of Haydn's genius and the simultaneous climax of the German Romantic literary Sturm und Drang movement. Stan Tracey , the pianist and composer, talks to CHARLES FOX about his long career on the British jazz scene. He worked in the bands of Ronnie Scott and Ted Heath before becoming house pianist at Ronnie Scott's Club in 1960. The many pieces he subsequently composed for his own quartet include his famous suite based on Under Milk Wood. The programme is illustrated with some of his many gramophone recordings.
