This Week's Composer Haydn

on BBC Radio 3

1732-1809
The early 1770s were years of fundamental change as far as Haydn's compositions were concerned. An increase in emotional content, drama, thematic concentration, contrapuntal ingenuity and technical mastery in general - all these are features of his music during this time. Links have often been drawn between this sudden maturing of Haydn's genius and the simultaneous climax of the German Romantic literary Sturm und Drang movement.
