Biber and Schmelzer
Two of the leading figures of the first Viennese school of composers which flourished in the late 17th century. They established a recognisable German style of instrumental music, and Biber's violin virtuosity in particular paved the way for Bach's solo violin sonatas.
Today's programme consists of sonatas for various instrumental combinations, and includes Biber's Battaglia. gramophone records

Dr Heinz Lubasz , Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Essex, argues that, while Marx is primarily thought to be a disciple of Hegel and the German idealist tradition, his own recent research suggests that the equally important influence of Aristotle on Marx has been insufficiently appreciated.
