A portrait of William Cowper compiled from his own writings by KERI LEWIS with Ronald Pickup as the poet Mary Wimbush as narrator.
Cowper's outwardly uneventful life was darkened by an illness which is nowadays known as manic depression.
No voice divine the storm allay'd
No light propitious shone;
When. snatch'd from all effectual aid
We perish'd, each alone;
But I, beneath a rougher sea. And whelm'd in deeper gulfs than he.

In Handel's rarely heard youthful Italian version of the story of Acis and Galatea - it has not been heard in Britain for over 20 years - Acis is a castrato role, here sung by a soprano, and the part of Polyphemus calls for a bass with an enormously wide range. The work is distinct from the familiar English setting of a decade later, which can be heard on Tuesday at 10.20 pm.
