In 1950 the University College of North Staffordshire - now Keele University - admitted its first students. It owed its existence largely to its first Principal, Lord Lindsay, and his educational ideas were in many ways revolutionary. He wanted to broaden higher education, and all his students were to study both arts and science, and share a common background of knowledge.
