In both France and Germany, in the years leading up to 1914, there is a rejection of the narrow scientific rationalism of the 19th century and a reaction in favour of philosophies of movement and energy. When this coincides with industrial revolution and a revolt against bourgeois values, the resulting mixture is explosive.
