Winter Sport
'I think it's time we had a piece on Sports Service. You know your plans for the next month or so.'
'But there's nothing happening,' I said. 'This is our quiet period.'
Nothing happening? Well, by comparison with the number of live sporting events available to us at other times of the year, this is almost true. But, of course, there is a great deal happening on which a radio Sports Service can report to an extent not possible, for a variety of reasons, on television. The aim of Sports Service is to be as comprehensive as the public interest in sport, and we are always looking for new ways to be just this.
In December, in a series of programmes under the title 'Talking Sport' we will try to look at various aspects of the sporting scene which are often overlooked and particularly at those sports and 'pastimes' which, although they have a large following, miss the limelight because of the absence of spectator appeal.
After the present series of 'Plain Sailing' we hope later on to interest the yachtsman with up-to-date news, particularly with regard to sailing conditions in coastal waters.
Racing enthusiasts will be interested to know that, in December, Catterick Bridge in Yorkshire will be added to our already fairly long list of courses from which we are able to broadcast live commentaries; but this week the spotlight falls on Sandown Park.
In the next few weeks the Sixth All Blacks with their particular brand of Rugby Union Football will enliven our Saturday afternoons. Today they take on Wales at Cardiff Arms Park and what is probably one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable crowds to assemble in any sporting arena.
And I need hardly say that if it is soccer you want, and an account of the game while it is actually in progress, this is the Service you tune to.
There's nothing happening?

by DR. F. S. DAINTON , F.R.S. Vice-Chancellor of NottinKham University
Dr. Dainton heads a committee concerned with the flow of scientists and technologists into our higher educational system. The committee has established now that there is a genuine swing away from science and technology, in total more than the swing towards the social sciences and economics. This swing may force changes in our science education-a hidden benefit from a highly unsatisfactory situation.
