Smoking and Health
Medical experts agree that smoking is bad for you, but what's the best method of giving up? Can acupuncture or hypnotherapy really work or is willpower still the answer? Why do women find it so much harder to give up than men? And will you really put on weight as you cut down on cigarettes?
On the eve of National No Smoking Day, the Director of ASH. David Simpson and Dr Bobbie Jacobson of the Chest Unit at London's
Whittington Hospital, join Sue MacGregor to answer your questions.

Another Applicant by NICK FISHER
Cummings seems just the man for the new position that Mr Wheeler is creating in his vast business consortium, for 'the old firm' is not adapting too well to the strains of modern life.
New reserves need tapping and fresh supplies are harder to come by. After all, it has become more difficult to wander the streets with fangs for all to see....

Who has the superior right: the smoker to smoke or the non-smoker to breath unpoluted air? On the eve of National No Smoking Day,
Julian Hale reports from California and Scotland. In San Francisco, voters have told the tobacco companies to 'butt out' - and the non-smoker now has the right to insist on clean air at the workplace. In Glasgow, a campaign is underway to make the entire city 'smoke free' by the year 2000.

An essay for radio
Jonathan Raban went to Fowey in Cornwall to winter out. He wanted air and solitude and Fowey seemed right. The tourists were gone, the summer restaurants closed.
Gradually he became absorbed in the life of the water outside his window; the estuary with its ferries, the people of Fowey and Polruan and the water-business.
