This is how Queen Victoria described her friend Sir Moses Montefiore, the Jewish philanthropist, the bicentary of whose birth occurs this year. Retiring a rich man at 40, he spent the next 60 years travelling the world with British Government support attempting to relieve the suffering of persecuted Jews in many countries. A big, impressive and devoutly religious man, he was the undisputed leader of British Jewry - he was Britain's first Jewish baronet - and was revered almost as a saint by many Jews abroad.
David Suchet and Miriam Margolyes read from the diaries of Moses and Judith Montefiore.
Others taking part include historians Lord Blake, Lionel Kochan, Raphael Loewe and the Bishop of Birmingham, The Rt Rev Hugh Montefiore.
Producer GRAHAM TAYAR
