The upland heather moor with its attendant red grouse, meadow pipits and merlins, goes under the grant-aided plough to emerge a strip of uniform green grass empty of wildlife. The Minister of Agriculture, The Rt Hon Michael Jopling , mp, claims that we get the best conservation when agriculture is profitable, but Dr Derek Ratcliffe , Chief Scientist of the Nature Conservancy Council, believes that farmers should be paid to be part-time nature wardens rather than produce crops already in surplus.

Many tonnes of potentially hazardous radioactive waste - the legacy of 30 years of nuclear power - are stored at present on the sites of reactors and reprocessing plants. Now, nuclear agencies are planning to construct underground repositories which, they believe, will more effectively isolate the waste from living things.
But there are worries that these stores won't adequately contain the dangerous radioactive material - and no one wants a disposal site near where they live.
Joe Cann , Professor of Geology at Newcastle
University, examines how these differences in opinion about the disposal of nuclear waste could be overcome so that an acceptable repository - in someone's back yard - can be chosen.
