Four hundred years ago this week one of the great mystics of the Christian church died at Alba de Toimes in Spain. As Teresa of Avila she has long been venerated as a saint and was the first woman to be declared a Doctor of the Church. During a lifetime of travels and battles to reform the Carmelite Order she was a figure of scandal and controversy as well as a source of awesome spiritual authority.
With the help of Teresa's own words Libby Purves traces the story of the public and inner lives of this remarkable woman. with Rosalind Knight as the voice of St Teresa of Avila
