It is two years since the present Pope came from Poland. Already he has created a unique worldwide reputation by his charismatic presence, his warmth of personality, and his non-stop travels. But behind the public euphoria, a struggle is going on for the heart of the Roman Catholic Church, a struggle in which many observers think the Pope himself is playing a decisive role. Are the progressive forces, released in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, losing their influence? Is there a genuine and effective conservative backlash?

Hugh Pearson is 50 years of age and dying. His family (wife, son. two daughters and their respective spouses) arrange a holiday in Corfu in the hope that this will give him an interest and a reason for living. He shows no interest at first but soon becomes obsessive about organising the holiday right down to the last detail. However, once on holiday his manner changes and although he knows it will be his last, he makes a great success of it.

As leader of Labour's European mps, her energy and experience have already won her much respect in the Community's first elected Parliament.
