The Idiot Lady by LOPE DE VEGA translated from the Spanish by GEORGE BRANDT
In this 1610 comedy Lope turns upside down the conventional view that love leads to foolishness by depicting a stupid girl whose mind is weakened by love as well as her heart:
I thank you. Love, for never having faltered
In so recasting me that, wholly altered,
1 have ascended by your inspiration
To Reason's bright and lofty habitation;
And with Laurencio to tutor me,
Love's student, I'll soon take my first degree.
Music by DAVID SELWYN with KENNETH MOBBS (harpsichord)
