The third in a sequence of plays concerning the fortunes in war (1939-45) of the young subaltern Charles Willoughby. From King Farouk's Egypt he is posted to Italy and after the peace is painfully involved in the resettlement of refugees. Chastened by his experiences, he returns to postwar England and a section of society that closes its eyes to any form of change.

Edith Holden lived in the Warwickshire village of Olton and it was there, in 1906, that she wrote and illustrated a naturalist's diary. Containing some of her favourite poetry and her own descriptions of the flora and fauna through the changing seasons of the year, the diary reflects Edith Holden's deep love of the countryside.
