A report by John Tusa London commuters' fares go up about 20 per cent next month. largely because the Government has withdrawn a £10-million subsidy. Another increase follows in 1972. Many rural bus services will close this year unless the Government and local authorities find subsidies. Railway services which lose money are also under review. More than four million rural dwellers are still without cars.
