A sardine shoal heads up the African coast, a tasty proposition for dolphins, sharks and seals, as revealed in Massive Nature

Massive Nature
8.30pm BBC1
Some nature programmes have an effect similar to science fiction. They show a reality that is recognisable and yet disturbingly alien to us, with creatures working by motives we can barely fathom. This is one of them, a look at one of nature's hidden spectacles: the huge shoal of sardines that migrates up the African coast - and the predators who hunt them.
Even with sublime photography, it's hard to convey the scale of the thing: 100 million fish moving in a group as one vast organism. Pods of dolphins seek them out, then use teamwork and tricks to confuse the fish and isolate a "baitball" of a mere 20,000, which then becomes a moving feast. Sharks, seals and gannets, normally deadly enemies, join in the killing spree.
It's an amazing sight, with sharks and dolphins plunging through curtains of tiny fish as gannets spear the water from above. It's hard to know what to make of it, other than to thank God you weren't born a sardine. David Butcher Sardine city: page 3
