Hearts and Bones 9.00pm BBC1
Last year's opening series was a fairly gloomy and unprepossessing affair which seemed to try so hard to distance itself from that other thirtysomething friends drama, Cold Feet, that it ended up falling off our TV screens into that most unforgiving territory - the Land of Couldn't Care Less.
My, my, how things have changed. The six-part second series is a thoroughly different, revitalised and compelling thing altogether. Gone are the moody introspection and the Ingmar-Berman-in-Ealing overtones and in come a new lightness of touch and a brisk change of pace. Hearts and Bones has somehow managed to reinvent itself so completely it looks set to become one of the best dramas around. Even if you weren't grabbed the first time around, you can drop straight into the lives of the group of old pals who have known each other since their teenage years in Coventry and have all fetched up in London.
We pick up where we left off. Emma (Dervla Kirwan) is forging a new life after her husband left her when he learnt of her affair with her boss and her love for his handsome brother Rich (Hugo Speer). Louise (Amanda Holden, who is rapidly becoming our own Jennifer Aniston and proving herself a deft comic actress) has joined the police force. And the brittle Amanda (the wonderful Sarah Parish) is counting the cost of her briefly resumed relationship with the terminally self-doubting Michael (Andrew Scarborough).
The writing is cool and sharp and the performances are top notch. Hearts and Bones is sunny, funny and thoughtful and well worth an hour of anyone's time.
