Where this differs from sister drama Casualty is that we get to see patients for more than one episode. Consequently we have an update on last week's heart transplant patient (who is doing very nicely, thank you). And there are some newcomers such as the teenage girl in a coma, and an elderly amputee who likes to smoke cannabis on the hospital roof.
We get to know a little more about the staff, too, many of whom are surprisingly human: the perennially cocky registrar Nick Jordan (Michael French) displays signs of nervousness when he has to attempt a heart operation for the first time; junior doctor Victoria Merrick (Lisa Faulkner) upsets a patient with her lack of bedside manner; and nurse Julie Fitzjohn (Nicola Stephenson) finds it hard to accept her friend's promotion. They also have a new, tough, ward sister to deal with.
