The majority of women who are raped know their alleged attackers - a fact which exacerbates the case ever coming to court, in that the woman and her counsel must feel sure they can prove that she did not encourage the attentions of her attacker. One-third of reported rapes never reach court. Of those that do, just 10 per cent result in a conviction. In the last of the series, Joan Bakewell examines whether the legal process has become unworkable when dealing with rape.
