Leonora Carrington and the House of Fear
Leonora Carrington was an English debutante who, before the war, ran away to Paris to join the Surrealists. No one was quite sure what became of her after that. Then three years ago her short stories were published here for the first time, and last year a major exhibition of her paintings toured England after opening at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The strange and sometimes disturbing world of Carrington's imagination caught the interest of both public and critics, but despite this success, Leonora didn't return to England. This was characteristic: for 75 years she had refused to do what was expected of her.
This film tells the story of her journey from a gothic mansion in Lancashire, to Paris at the height of the surrealist movement, into a lunatic asylum in Spain, and finally to Mexico City.
