Seventy-five years after
Passchendaele, 50 years after El Alamein , ten after the Falklands conflict and nearly two after the Gulf War, David Dimbleby describes the scene as people from all walks of life gather at the Cenotaph in Whitehall to pay tribute to those who have died for their country. On behalf of the nation, Her Majesty the Queen lays her wreath of red Flanders poppies in memory of those who lost their lives in the two world wars and the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev and Rt Hon David Hope , conducts a short act of worship, before the march past by the Royal British Legion and 9,000 ex-servicemen and women. With music played by the massed bands and pipes and drums of the Guards Division.
