The investigative documentary series reveals the story of Russia's master spies - known as the "illegals" or "sleepers". "We take a standard Russian," explains one retired illegal, "and turn him into a standard Canadian. Then we infiltrate him into another country and let him burrow his way into the highest levels of government, army or establishment. This takes years, but we are patient."

Despite the end of the Cold War, spies are still a vital ingredient of all governments in Russia - whether communist or would-be capitalist. But they are now denied the ease of operating from embassies under diplomatic cover, so Moscow's rulers are even more dependent upon the elite of Russia's intelligence officers whose activities have until now been shrouded in secrecy.

For the first time, the illegals talk about their success as master spies. And they reveal an unexpected sting to their story - when recalled, their own bosses in the KGB often suspect them of having been corrupted by the time they have spent in the west.

Sweden v France
Highlights from Stockholm of the opening match in the ninth championships between the hosts Sweden and Group 1 favourites France.
Michel Platini's French side have the only 100 per cent qualifying record and will be hoping to repeat their 1984 European Championship success when they were hosts and Platini was captain, scoring nine goals in five games. In that final, the French team, which included Alain Giresse and Dominique Rocheteau , beat
Spain 2-0 in Paris. Will players like captain Manuel Amoros , Jean-Pierre Papin and Eric Cantona live up to their reputations?
Sweden are playing their first competitive match since their disastrous showing in the 1990 World Cup finals. Thomas Brolin , of the Italian cup winners Parma, spearheads the attack. The English connection is strongly in evidence with Arsenal's Anders Limpar in midfield, and Sheffield
Wednesday's Roland Nilsson in defence.
Plus the latest news from the England camp as they prepare for tomorrow's opening Group 1 match against Yugoslavia.
Introduced by Desmond Lynam with Jimmy Hill and Terry Venables. Commentary by Barry Davies.
