Five thousand children sang Rainbow City as Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince and Princess of Wales, inaugurated the Glasgow Garden Festival of 1988. Waiting to greet them was an invited audience of 45,000. Gallagher and Lyle saluted the royal couple with their festival song, You Put the Heart Back in the City. And, as The Prince of Wales declared the festival open, Glasgow rang with a royal salute of church bells, ships' sirens and fireworks. Tom Fleming recaptures the opening of the biggest outdoor event in Britain this year.
