Until the middle of the last century, children were specifically banned from
Britain's hospitals for fear that they might be a cause of infection. In 1852 Great
Ormond Street opened its doors - the first hospital in this country founded especially to treat sick children. Martyn Lewis follows the daily triumphs and tragedies of the patients, parents and staff at this world-famous hospital. 'You cannot help being struck by the dedication of the nurses and doctors. The impact of their compassion for their young charges will stay with you for life.' Children arrive close to death in the hope that Great Ormond Street, which has pioneered so many medical breakthroughs in the past, will be able to offer them a future.
Now the future of Great Ormond Street itself is in jeopardy; the hospital is showing its age and must be rebuilt. The Prince and Princess of Wales, continuing a royal connection that began with Queen Victoria, are, as joint patrons of the hospital's Wishing Well
Appeal, leading the campaign to ensure that Great Ormond Street will be able to give many critically ill children at least - A Fighting Chance. Photography JIM PEIRSON Film editor DAVID THOMAS Producer TERENCE O'REILLY

Barry Norman has seen almost 200 films this year for Film 87 and, amazingly, he's survived the experience. As always, the films catered for a wide taste (or lack of...) - the comedy of Steve Martin , the violence of Lethal Weapon, the romance of 84 Charing Cross Road and the nostalgia of Hope and Glory. Will any of these feature in Barry's final choice? Will you agree with his selection? Watch the final take of Film 87, as the cameras prepare to roll for Film 88.

Terry Malloy , an ex-boxer, protected by his brother Charlie, hangs around New York's dockland
'working' as a strong-arm man for the corrupt leader of the dockers' union. When his friend is murdered, Terry reveals a dawning sense of personal responsibility through his love for the dead man's sister. Marlon Brando received one of this powerful film's eight Academy Awards for his portrayal of the man whose personal rebellion changes the tyrannical work system. The film, shot entirely on location in New
York, proved one of the most influential - and controversial - movies of its decade.
