Britain's hospitals for fear that they might be a cause of infection. In 1852 Great
Ormond Street opened its doors - the first hospital in this country founded especially to treat sick children. Martyn Lewis follows the daily triumphs and tragedies of the patients, parents and staff at this world-famous hospital. 'You cannot help being struck by the dedication of the nurses and doctors. The impact of their compassion for their young charges will stay with you for life.' Children arrive close to death in the hope that Great Ormond Street, which has pioneered so many medical breakthroughs in the past, will be able to offer them a future.
Now the future of Great Ormond Street itself is in jeopardy; the hospital is showing its age and must be rebuilt. The Prince and Princess of Wales, continuing a royal connection that began with Queen Victoria, are, as joint patrons of the hospital's Wishing Well
