The Lawn Tennis Championships from the All England Club

In accordance with tradition, the defending men's singles champion Boris Becker will open play this afternoon on the Centre Court. Becker is trying to win his third title in a row but he again faces formidable opposition. Among the contenders there's Ivan Lendl, the world's number one player and beaten finalist last year; Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg who head the Swedish challenge; Australia's Davis Cup hero Pat Cash; and John McEnroe who has won three times, the last in 1984 when, in the final against Jimmy Connors, he produced one of the finest exhibitions of tennis ever seen on the Centre Court.

Harry Carpenter introduces live coverage of Wimbledon 87, as the BBC celebrates 50 years of televising the event.

On 6 March the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized suddenly just outside Zeebrugge and 188 people lost their lives. Tonight Fred Emery investigates why nothing was done to make ferries less vulnerable.

For years ship designers have been urging safety features which, in the event of accident, might prevent rapid capsize and so gain crucial time for passengers to evacuate. But for years shipowners have argued that ferries have a safety record second to none and should not be penalised by costly design changes. The disaster inquiry judge is now considering what changes to recommend.

Behind the rapid growth of unemployment in the last five years, there have been fundamental changes in the pattern of employment in this country which will have profound effects both on the British economy and on British society.

Fred Emery introduces a discussion of these changes and their consequences, looking at some of the issues raised in the earlier programmes in this series.
