The last of three programmes about the critical issues facing the Jewish nation. Fortress Zion
Two thousand years ago a group of religious zealots killed themselves at Masada, rather than submit to the Romans. Today making Israel and its borders secure still seems a sacred duty for the country's leaders. War and terrorism since the State was founded in 1948 have seen to that. In this light the occupation and settlement of the Arab West Bank can be seen. But many Israelis suspect that clinging to conquered land so stubbornly is threatening the very survival of the State.
Martin Young has been back to the ancient fortress to watch the Israeli Tank Corps proclaim ' Never again Masada' and to examine the fortress mentality.
