VICTORY FOR VASTLY IMPROVED Wales against the formidable USSR in Wrexham this afternoon could ensure that they will eventually qualify as one of the two teams from Group 3. They have maximum points from five matches, plus the expectancy of at least two more, as they have a home game with Iceland in October among their remaining fixtures. If Wales do reach the World Cup finals, it would be for the first time since 1958.

Featuring live coverage of Switzerland v England from Basle
It is 19 years since England played their way into a World Cup Final series - in 1966 they automatically qualified as hosts, and, four years later, as holders of the greatest football prize on earth. Two of their five points at the present qualifying stage came from an unimpressive 2-1 win against Switzerland at Wembley last November, and after the 0-0 result at home to Romania, there are question marks against Ron Greenwood's men. This return game in Basle, followed by the second tour match against Hungary on 6 June, will go a long way to deciding whether England sees the tournament in Spain next summer as participants or spectators.
