The songs reflect the times. The second programme in this series of eight, celebrating 80 years of British popular music, recreates the Golden Age of Musical Comedy, to tell the story of Lionel Monckton written by TONY STAVEACRE
A stage-struck law-student, he patronised the Gaiety Theatre in the Strand, where he fell under the spell of the Gaiety Girls and started writing songs for them: It's the ladies, the little ladies;
For they look so sweet and smart That they captivate my heart. At their glances It simply dances
Oh, there's nothing in the world for me but girls!
He married Gertie Millar , who rose from a Bradford girls' choir to become Queen of Musical Comedy - and Lionel Monckton wrote some of his best songs for her: 'Keep off the Grass', 'Captivating Cora ', ' Moonstruck ' (I'm Such a Silly When the Moon Comes Out ...).
He wrote one of the first truly integrated musicals, called The Arcadians, and captivated Edwardian audiences with his vision of Arcadia, and songs like 'The Pipes of Pan', 'Arcady is Ever Young ', ' The Joy of Life '.
The story of Lionel Monckton and Gertie Millar is told, and their songs are sung, by The Songwriters' resident company:
