Scotland reach the World Cup finals again - and beat England at Wembley. So do Wales, and Don Revie quits for the Arab Emirates and £340,000.
Tennis: Virginia Wade wins Wimbledon in its centenary year; Bjorn Bopg plays in one of the finest matches of all time, and then beats Jimmy Connors to retain his title.
Horse Racing: Red Rum, at the age of 12, is the first horse to win three Grand Nationals; Lester Piggott wins his eighth Derby with The Minstrel; Willie Carson and Dunfermline bring HM The Queen two Jubilee Classic triumphs.
Golf: Tom Watson wins the Open with the lowest-ever score after an epic two-day duel with Jack Nicklaus.
Motor Racing: Niki Lauda regains the World Championship - and quits Ferrari.
On the Water, there are British world champions In canoe slalom, skiing, yachting, and rowing; and On Wheels, in motor cycling with Barry Sheene , Phil Read and the Sidecar team and in speedway. In Athletics, there's triumph for Steve Ovett in the first-ever World
Cup; and in Boxing, Muhammad AU is still ' The Greatest'.

Patrick Moore talks to Arthur C. Clarke, science-fiction writer, who describes himself as an armchair astronaut, and The Sky at Night welcomes the return of Michael Bentine, best known as a humorist, but who is also a serious and dedicated scientist.
