The arts in action
Introduced by Humphrey Burton Tonight: My Homeland - a portrait of Hungary from exile. For the past 700 years, years of oppression and struggle for freedom, the poet in Hungary has been the teacher, the spiritual leader of his nation. With passion and courage he has searched for the essence of the country, for the predicament of its people. His words ignited the fuse of two revolutions - 1848 and 1956 - both crushed.
This anthology of Hungarian poetry, largely unknown in the West, is a reflection of the spirit, the history and the people of that country. Poems spoken by MICHAEL BRYANT and JUDI DENCH
