Within the last fortnight news media all over the world have reported on the controversial work of Dr Josef Issels. Until the beginning of the year this little-known Bavarian physician was ostracised by his medical colleagues because he had repeatedly claimed that he was able to treat cancer patients with a measure of success where all other doctors had failed. It is a claim that has been described as arrogant and dangerous and which in many ways reflects Josef Issels's own personality.
Tonight both his personality and that claim are investigated. As you watch this report, remember one important fact. The cancer treatment practised by Dr Issels is still scientifically unproven to the medical world at large. Yet two weeks ago an internationally accepted authority publicly urged that a team of medical investigators should be sent to Bavaria to enquire whether a mass trial of Dr Issels's methods should be carried out in Britain.
