An inter-town contest of skill and strength

The winner will represent Great Britain in the Eurovision competition to be held in Bruges, Belgium, on June 27.
Tonight's programme introduced from Eastbourne by David Vine and Eddie Waring
Referee, Arthur Ellis
See page 30
Rival resorts Eastbourne and Hastings fight for a place in the international contest Jeux sans Frontieres.
Eastbourne have been preparing their squad in a secret training camp with team coach Len Fuller, station officer of the town's fire brigade. Hastings have kept rather quiet about their preparations. But they are confident of winning with the help of an attractive group of cheer-leaders and plenty of supporters.
Highlight of the contest could be a game involving a rocking four-poster bed. At the top of each post is a clothes basket-and for 'man and wife' it will be a precarious and hilarious task getting ready for bed.

Alex Young is a small, quiet man. He looks delicate and tentative. But on a football field, when things are going well for him, he's a giant. Alex is not a bit flash. He is precise and elegant and subtle. Only sophisticates like Joe Horrigan really appreciate him. To them he is the golden vision.
Joe and the men like him are married to Alex and the Everton team. It is a volatile marriage, but divorce is never even thought of. Life is football-to be talked about, dreamt of all the week, and embraced on Saturday...

"Kenneth Loach could whip up a racy narrative from the fine print on a parking ticket I was entertained to the end" (Sunday Telegraph)
"It caught the flavour of the wry Merseyside humour" (The Times)
