Translated by Barbara Wright with Nigel Stock and Lyndon Brook
This play is the chronicle of a famous miscarriage of justice. The scene is Le Havre, 1910, when conditions among the men who unloaded the coal-boats were appalling. During a strike a man is found murdered after a dockside brawl, and the authorities seize the opportunity of getting rid of the chief agitator for social reform by accusing him of the crime.
