The great sculpture of the Yoruba of Western Nigeria has become famous, but there has always been a barrier to the wide appreciation of their poetry — no less developed, rich, and various. In presenting these translations, Ulli Beier reveals that this is due not only to the complexity of the Yoruba language but to the fact that during centuries of literacy in Europe we have forgotten many of the possibilities of poetry, qualities still retained by Yoruba poets today.
