Until eleven years ago the earliest date in America that scholars could depend on was that of its discovery, 1492. The situation has been dramatically transformed by the use of the Carbon-14 method of dating archaeological remains.
Dr. Bushnell is Curator of the University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Cambridge.
